Setting Weight Loss Goals the Correct Way
August 10, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Setting weight loss goals doesn’t have to be a mystery. In fact, it is a lot easier once you know the proper way to set them. But wait, I can almost hear you say. There is a proper way to setting weight loss goals?
Oh, yes.
In fact, I would argue that a lack of goal setting knowledge is what contributes to the massive number of people who fail with their weight loss goals. Before you decide to start setting your next weight loss goals, consider the following --
Make Sure When You Are Setting Weight Loss Goals That It Are Measurable.
It is not enough to say that you want a six pack, or that you want to be skinny, or that you want to lose some weight. It is vital that you have a precise number in mind. Even a goal like saying that you want to lose ten pounds might not be enough. Probably the best weight loss goal you could make is to set a body fat percentage goal.
After all, if you do any sort of weight resistance you might not lose any weight at all over the first couple weeks (remember that muscle is denser and heavier than fat, so the scale won’t be an entirely accurate representation of where you are at with your weight loss goals). Making your weight loss goals as specific and measurable as possible gives you a clear target to shoot at. There is no doubt about what your goal, you know precisely what it is.
Prepare Yourself For Failure.
This might sound like a bizarre thing to talk about when we are discussing weight loss goals. The inability or incapacity to expect and acknowledge failure is what results in most people falling flat on their face when it comes to their weight loss goals. Look, you know full well that life never goes perfectly.
No matter how well our plans are created, something will invariably try to know you off course. Perhaps you become frustrated because you aren’t seeing results fast enough, or you are unable to work out for a few days, or you are ill and miss a week at the gym. The key in dealing with these roadblocks is to acknowledge them as temporary setbacks – and nothing else. It’s not a “sign” that you don’t deserve to accomplish your weight loss goals.
Be Willing to Be Brutally Honest With Yourself About Your Weight Loss Goals.
Are you capable of losing 25 pounds in a month? Maybe. Maybe not. When you are outlining your weight loss goals be willing to challenge yourself, but don’t shoot for the moon in the first month. Your ultimate weight loss goal should be a life-long change in your body and eating habits. When we allow ourselves to dream bigger than reality dictates, we become very quickly discouraged. We begin to feel like we are failures, that we don’t deserve to achieve our weight loss goals. Do what you have to do to insure that your weight loss goals are realistic yet challenging.
Cover All of Your Angles.
In other words, don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Keep your diet plan fresh and ever-changing to keep you engaged. Try a ton of different physical activities to keep your body and mind fresh and excited about physical exercise.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing the same thing over and over again – after all, we are creatures of habit, even if the habits aren’t necessarily productive. Be willing to extend yourself out of your comfort zone and try new sports, activites and diets. Not only will this keep you excited about getting fit, but you’ll likely pick up some great new hobbies along the way.
Get a Great Support System Together.
We all have positive influences in our lives. The opposite is true. There are those naysayers and enablers who would rather see you live below your potential. Think about who the positive influences are in your life, write out their names, and make an effort to spend more time with them. This can also include finding the right support personnel to help you in your weight loss goals – people such as nutritionists, physical trainers, and even things like a running group.
