Your Bullet-Proof Guide to Goals

Start Setting Goals the RIGHT WAY and Make This Year Your Best Yet!

setting goalsJanuary 16, 2011 -- (by Alex Work)  Setting goals is not complicated. We sit down, write out what we want, and that is largely the extent of it for most people. However, setting goals is far more complicated than that—it’s not simply wishing for something. If it were just wishful thinking, everyone would have everything they’d ever wanted. In fact, it’s too difficult for almost everyone.

But not for you, not today. I am going to give you seven powerful guidelines for setting goals, and then at the end I am going to discuss a goal setting guide that is built specifically for anyone who wants to master setting goals in no time flat.

But first...

Setting goals is relatively basic when looked at from the outside. Many people assume it is as simple as writing out a goal, and that’s it. But setting goals is all about what takes place between where you are today and where you want to end up, and this is where people usually fall short with their setting goals.

Follow these time-tested, bullet-proof techniques to guarantee that your setting goals is highly effective, and let's make this year the best one yet:

1. Be Sure This is What You Want to Do.

If your goal is worth achieving, it’s going to involve a substantial amount of time and work on your behalf. There is a chance you won’t see any financial or personal rewards for stretches of time. You have to be sure that this is something you care so deeply about; that matters so incredibly much to you, that you will be willing to brave any storm.

2. When Setting Goals Make Them Time Sensitive and Specific.

When do you want to achieve your personal goals? If it’s losing weight, how much? If you want to make money, how much? Set a deadline to insure that you move towards your goal with urgency. When we give a goal an open-ended deadline, we are performing a form of procrastination. We are allowing ourselves to place the goal in the distant future, in the land of “somewhere” and “somehow.” We are leaving our goals to fate, and fate rarely has a way of giving us anything without us putting something in first.

3. Give Yourself a Firm Goal with a Flexible Deadline.

Firm enough that it causes you to act now and act with urgency until the deadline, but flexible enough so that if you run out of time, you are willing to give yourself a realistic extension without punishing yourself by throwing the whole project out the window because you didn’t get it done in time.

4. Take Your Goal and Break it Down.

And I mean break it down. To the point that you have a step that you can measurably begin with today. Wishful thinkers are always thinking of a future reality, of achieving a dream that will one day come to them. You have to shift your thinking into believing that your dream is starting today, right now. Don’t wait for tomorrow to start setting goals.

setting goals5. Surround Yourself with a Strong Support System.

Have you made your circle of friends and peers a positive one? Are there members of your social group that will ridicule your goal or setting goals and even impede your progress? Sort out the enablers, the pessimists and the doom-and-gloom crowd. Setting goals is hard enough—last thing you need are people dragging you back.

6. Don’t Be Shy About Being Flexible While Making Goals.

It’s inevitable that things will get in your way. We can’t control everything that happens in our lives, but we do have the ability to choose how we react to them. When roadblocks come your way, you must become fluid and find a way around or through it. Imagine yourself as water; there is no keeping it out. Life can put up walls, put up sandbags, but you will find a way through.

7. Take Time to Celebrate Your Triumphs.

Take a moment to remember why you have embarked on this trip of self-discovery. Once you get this taste of success you will become greedy for it and it will propel you to even greater heights.
