Positive Thinking Made Easy | 5 Ways to Get Thinking Positive Today
by Alex Work
October 7, 2011 (Vancouver, BC) -- Did you know that something as seemingly minor as positive thinking could be the one thing that is holding you back from achieving the personal goals you want from life? The best part about positive thinking is that it is something that is completely in your control – you have 100% say in whether or not you want to use this powerful tool to help you live the life you’ve always wanted.
When was the last time that you met someone who had a negative attitude about their lives and goals achieve anything worthwhile? Probably never, right?
Positive thinking doesn’t mean being gleeful over other people’s misery, or smiling even when we are feeling tortured inside. If you are familiar with “The Secret” I am not talking about that either.
Positive thinking is the willingness to see positive outcomes and results. Positive thinking means that you look at a problem and don’t see defeat, but see an opportunity.
5 STRATEGIES FOR POSITIVE THINKING
1. Work Towards Positive Outcomes. Are you setting negative goals for yourself? When you make negative goals you are immediately handicapping your ability to get motivated to achieve your goals. Compare the following goal, stated in two polarised terms—
“I want live a healthy and fit lifestyle.”
“I don’t want to be fat and lazy.”
One of those goals is significantly more likely to be achieved than the other. One encourages forward movement and action while the other sparks a fearful paralysis. Outline your goals in a positive manner.
2. Redefine Failure. Failure doesn’t come when things go awry, failure comes in us not learning or acting from them. True failure, the catastrophic type, is when setbacks happen and we allow ourselves to be defeated, retreating to a life that we weren’t happy with, shelving our goals because of one stumble.
3. Understand That Positive Thinking is Not an Overnight Project. Most of us have spent a large part of our lives giving ourselves negative self-talk. To think that we can change this overnight is overly ambitious. The reality is that positive thinking is like anything else that is worth achieving – it takes consistent effort and work.
4. Build a Support System That Encourages Positivity. This doesn’t mean that you should hire a cheerleading team to follow you around cheering you on, but it does mean you should take a close look at who the people are in your life that have influence on you. I know what you are probably htinking right now – “I’m my own person, nobody can or will influence me one way or the other.” This is your ego talking. The people we surround ourselves with have a demonstrable impact on how we think and act. Do the people around you encourage positive thinking or are they dragging you down with their own negativity?
5. Live Now. Whenever you feel like you are starting to get overwhelmed with things, whether it is stress or the fear of futre events not panning out the way you desire, take a breath, close your eyes and live in the moment. This takes a little practise, but it can have an incredibly calming effect on yourself when you use it. (For a more complete explanation of this process and how it can help you, I highly recommend Eckhart’s “The Power of Now.”)
