Powerful Self-Talk Made Easy | Discover How to Propel Your Goals to Atmospheric Heights with Positive Self-Talk

self-talkSeptember 16, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Did you know that something as simple as positive self-talk can mean the very difference between success and failure with your goals?

Think about the last few things that you said to yourself.

How many of them were good or supportive? If you are like most people, a solid 60-70 percent of the things you say to yourself are negative. Given the hundreds and hundreds of thoughts we process over the course of a single day, that is an avalanche of self-inflicted negativity.

Countless times per day you are telling yourself that you cannot do something. That you don’t deserve something. That life is unfair and that you have no chance. Day after day, you drill your mind into believing these fabricated statements—which mostly have no basis in reality—until you come to believe them.

HOW DOES THIS SEEMINGLY HARMLESS SELF-TALK AFFECT YOU?

Negative self-talk increases stress levels, decreases performance, and increases anxiety and feelings of low self-worth. It paralyzes the mind from acting towards the things you truly want and know you can achieve.

When was the last time you set out to do something, but at some point early in the process you stopped because of doubt? You derailed yourself not because of a lack of ability, or a lack of talent, time or even money, but because your self-talk convinced you that you could not do it.

Pessimism breeds self-loathing, as they blame themselves when things go terribly wrong and therefore are less willing to try again. They expect the worst to always occur and when something good finally does go right, even then they view it as a coincidence. It’s a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Negative self-talk also perpetuates a negative feeling you are experiencing by putting it into a concrete thought and giving it validity.

NEGATIVE SELF-TALK VS. POSITIVE SELF-TALK

Let's take a look at how self-talk, whether it is positive or negative, can not only impact you mentally, but also cause a strong, visceral physical response from you as well:

You’re sitting in traffic. The car before you hasn’t moved in 20 minutes, the heat is scorching, and your stomach is growling after a long day at work. Sighing heavily to yourself, you think:

“This is just my luck, to get stuck in traffic on one of the hottest days of the year. This is so unfair. I hate traffic and I hate being out here. I wonder who the a**hole is that caused all this?”

Now, that’s some strong language: hate, just my luck, unfair, a**hole. Do you suppose that this type of self-talk will have feel better about your situation? Of course not! If anything, these thoughts would perpetuate how you are feeling, and make you even more miserable.

These mental things suddenly become physical as you start shaking your head, you get that feeling of your blood rising, and you begin feeling agitated – a very physical response to what was initially a mental response.

Let’s try the same thoughts, expressed differently:

“I’m stuck in traffic, but then again, so are hundreds of other people just like me. I wonder what could have happened to cause this?”

Were you to think the second set of thoughts, do you suppose your anxiety and stress would go up, or go down? The answer should be obvious. In this example several techniques were used to sugar-coat the first thoughts into something more neutral and less negative. These techniques (there are 4 of these positive self-talk tools) are all timeless and time-tested and are discussed in YourGoalBook. More about that later. But first…

Acknowledging that we say these things to ourselves is the first step in eliminating these debilitating thoughts for good.

Let’s try a second example of how positive self-talk and negative self-talk affects you.

One that is directly related to goal setting and one that I have seen happen more times than I wish to remember. Consider the following scenario –positive self talk

You have set a powerful, mouth-watering goal for yourself. You are passionate about it, you have a great support system around you to help you get there, and you have created a powerful plan of action to guide you all the way there.

But eventually, as it always does in life, your motivation begins to wean. Setbacks start happening, and you begin making excuses for why you aren’t chasing feverently after your goal anymore. At this moment in life, there are essentially two different types of people:

Person #1: “I don’t deserve it. It is too difficult. My plan isn’t working anymore.”

However, simply by being aware of the power that positive self-talk holds, you can adjust these thoughts into something like:

Person #2: “If someone else could do this, why not me? Of course it’s difficult-- it’s worth achieving. My plan is good – it simply needs some fine-tuning.”

These minor changes in your self-talk can mean the very difference between success and failure.

Person #1 will abandon their goals and dreams every time with self-talk like this. Person #2, however, will always find a way. Just like water running downhill, they will not be denied. They will go in, around or over their goals if they have to, and positive self-talk is one of the tools they use to do so.
