Personal Planning | 7 Steps to Powerful Personal Planning
August 20, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Personal planning for most people sounds like a lot of work. It entails asking some serious questions about yourself, your goals and what you want your life to look like. It also requires you to challenge yourself, and many people would rather live and toil in mediocrity than take the risk of failure and chase after the things they really want.
But for the rest, personal planning is the means they use to get the awesome things from life. They realize that effective personal planning gives them purpose, gives them focus, and a powerful blueprint for their success.
Are you thinking about doing personal planning to achieve your own goals and dreams? Here are 7 effective tips and techniques to make your personal planning fly with the eagles --
1. Have a Clear Vision of Exactly Where You Want to Be. Your end goal should be something very clear and measurable. Personal planning is infinitely more difficult when we are faced with hazy or unclear goals. Build laser-like focus by having your end goal something that is crystal-clear and unmistakable. Write out every last detail about your end goal – where you are, who is around you, how it is going to make you feel.
2. Define a Clear Target Date. To push you into action it is necessary to have a timeframe for your personal plannnig. Don't fall victim to "someday syndrome" by doing personal planning in the following format – "I want to be rich one day." Phrasing your goal this way insures that you will forever procrastinate on chasing after it.
3. Plan the Path to Your End Goal. The easiest way to do this is to do it from your end goal and work backwards. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, write out a different couple paths you might end up taking from that end goal. Get creative and write out as many steps as you can.
4. What is the First Step? Now that you have your personal plan laid out, what is the first step going to be? It has to be something that you can do today. And I mean today. Action is a habit, and it is not something you can pick up tomorrow or the day after, or next week when you "feel like it." Act now.
5. Highlight the Major Steps in Your Plan. Undoubtedly there will be the 4-5 major signposts in your journey. They are the major turning points that will propel you ever closer to your personal planning goal. They are the chapters in your journey, and focusing on these portions of your ultimate goal can help you from getting overwhelmed.
6. Embrace the Bumps in the Road. Look, no matter how much time you spend personal planning, things will happen that you will not be able to forsee. As much as we like to believe we control everything in our lives, there are things that will happen that will try and knock you off your path. The key is to be willing to take these setbacks head-on. Adjust your personal planning, and adapt to your new circumstances as they happen. Simply doing this will put you head and shoulders who try any formof personal planning.
7. Evaluate to Stay on Track and Stay Motivated. Reassess what is working and what is not. Shed the activities/people/steps that are keeping you stalled. Focus on the things that are helping you get where you want to go quicker. Be ruthless about finding alternates—don't feel like you need to stick to your plan out of sentimental reasons. What matters at the end of the day is that it works, not that it remains the same from day one.
