Goals Plan | 6 Steps to Building a Powerful Goals Plan

goals planAugust 19, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Do you want a goals plan so that you can get your dreams back on track? Do you have big goals and a ton of desire to see them come to fruition, but you aren't totally sure where to start? Building a goals plan to help you achieve your goals and dreams doesn't need to be overly complicated. In fact, once you know these timeless techniques you can get started on building a goals plan that will supercharge your chances of success.

Like everything else in life, there is a proper and incorrect way to make a goals plan. In fact, the way that we are taught goal setting from most mainstream outlets is actually wrong, or simply incomplete.

Take the SMART goals principles for instance. While they do a good job of introducing us to the concept of goals, they don't go into the heart of goal setting -- and that is creating a goals plan.

Without one we are like a ship without a rudder; forever adrift. The moment you build a goals plan correctly you will find that your life will come into focus very quickly. You will be reinvigorated with a sense of purpose and drive that you didn't think was possible.

1. Plan From the End.

The easiest place to start plotting out the achievement of your goals is with the end. Start from the moment where you can say that you have achieved your goal, and then trace the steps necessary backwards from there.

2. Your Goals Plan Should Be Specific.

The more detailed you make everything about your plan, the more realistic it becomes and the more likely it is that you will go through with it. Everything in your goals plan – the steps, the deadlines, the goals themselves, must be specific.  Don’t make your targets hazy or unclear, give yourself the maximum amount of clarity possible by giving yourself an exact bullseye to aim at.

3. Your Goals Plan Should End Here.

Your goals plan should trace your goal setting journey all the way to this every moment. The first step in your goals plan has to be something you can do today. It cannot be something you have to do tomorrow, or worse yet – “someday.” There is no time like the present to take action, and your goals plan must reflect this.

4. Be Flexible Enough to Allow for Setbacks.

Life never goes exactly the way we want. Things happen that are out of our control that can threaten to derail us out of our goals plan. The difference between those that succeed and those that toil in mediocrity is that the former have the ability to view failure as nothing more than a temporary setback. They adapt and adjust their goals plan accordingly and move on. I cannot count how many times I have seen people throw their goals away the moment their goals plan hits a bump in the road. Commit to your success – in the end your goals plan will almost certainly look different than it did in the beginning.

5. Have a Mechanism to Monitor Progress.

This could mean having daily, weekly or monthly evaluations. Doing this will do two huge things for you and your goals: One, it will force you to keep on track. And secondly, it will give you a chance to see where things are working and where things are not. This gives you an awesome opportunity to shelve the things that are not helping and focus on the things that are.

6. Build an Awesome Support System.

John Donne, the English clergyman said it best, "No man is an island, entire of itself." As nice as it would be to be able to accomplish great things purely by our own skills and hard work, it's a lot easier when you have the support and encouragement of a solid support system.

These people form a backbone of support that will help you in times where you find your motivation sagging. They will be a sounding board for your ideas and also give you the unconditional love and support you need to see your goals plan through to the very end. Eliminate the naysayers and the enablers who criticize and put your goals plan down under the guise of friendship. After all, how can you expect to fly with eagles when you surround yourself with turkeys?

Envelop yourself and your goals plan with people who are interested in seeing you succeed. This could mean that you go looking for a mentor, or find other like-minded people.
