Achieve Your Career Goal -- Six Powerful Guidelines

career goalJanuary 26, 2011 -- (by Alex Work) Career goal setting is a powerful way of getting yourself motivated to start living the life you have always wanted. When you were a kid and were asked what you wanted to be when you grew up, you were always ready with an answer: Doctor, vet, astronaut, fighter jet pilot. Now that we're adults we aren't nearly as sure anymore.

One way to get around this uncertainty is to start working on your career goals. Learn what you want, set your career goal, and then plan accordingly. But we both know it is a little more complicated than that.

The fact is, there are many factors to consider when deciding on your career goal. Finding some clarity in this area can be achieved when you focus on the following four areas--

Play to Your Strengths. What are you most interested in? What are you most passionate about? An easy way to plot a satisfactory career goal is to ask yourself: "If I could work any job in the world, irresective of money, what would I do?"

Money. This is usually the first thing most people think about. And rightfully so—while money doesn't make the world go round it does pay the bills. Does your career goal have sufficient renumeration for you to live at the level you desire?

Opportunity for Growth. Challenge is the fertilizer for growth. When we are challenged we expand our horizons, learn new skills and abilities, and grow as workers and individuals. Make certain that you career goal, whatever it is, holds plenty of opportunity for you to test your mettle.

Stability Comes in Options, Not On Depending Someone Else. Keep in mind that a company will always do what is inherently in its best interests. People are the same way, and for this reason it should be noted that you should forget the notion of complete job security. The past ten years or so has seen drastic changes to the look and feel industry, particularly in North America. There has been a massive shift to service jobs, and a steady depletion in what used to be fairly dependable manufacturing jobs. Prepare for your career goal by giving yourself as many options now for when life throws you that inevitable curveball.

Now that we have these rough guidelines in place, let's get to work on your career goal.

Six Timeless Guidelines for Your Career Goal

1. Outline Your Career Goal.

What do you aspire to be? What do you want your professional life to look like? Make your career goal as specific and vivid as you can, imagining every last detail, from where you are when you achieve your career goal to what you first day looks like.

2. Motivation for Picking This Career Goal.

Outline all the reasons you have for wanting to accomplish your career goals and objectives. List the factors that made you decide this was what you wanted to do with your life. Try and seek out the reasons that are larger than yourself (i.e. in what aspects of your career will you be able to help others, or give back to the community.) Recognizing these aspects of your career goal will make it more meaningful to you and give you a greater sense of purpose.

3. Develop Chapters for Your Career Goal.

List 10-12 smaller steps that stand between where you are right this moment and achieving your career goal. If you are having difficulty with this exercise, start from your career goal and work backwards until you get to today. The most crucial part of this exercise is to have the first step be something that you can do something today, something you can act on immediately. This will insure that you stay clear of the "someday" syndrome most people have. ("I'm going to be successful, someday...")

4. Make Your Career Goal Time Sensitive.

Affix a deadline to your career goal. This is necessary for two reasons: One, it gives you a specific target to aim at. Secondly, it infuses you with the desire to act. That looking deadline should be enough of a push to get you moving towards it with a sense of urgency.

5. Resources.

List everything and everyone you will require in your career goal journey. Perhaps it is the help of colleagues, teachers, or my favorite, enlisting the assistance of a mentor. Write down everything you are going to need.

6. Monitor Your Progress.

The best way to do this is with a goal book. You can centralize all the steps to your goal, create an action plan, track your progress, and evaluate your results.
